The 8/8/8 rule

by Herb Reeves
Sep 25, 2025

Sunday with Herb

Hey there, have you heard of the 8/8/8 rule?

That's:

  • 8 hours for sleep

  • 8 hours for life

  • 8 hours for work

That's a fair formula for an 24 hour day.

It's not a a work/life balance - it's a work/life/sleep balance.

The key here is maintaining that 8 hours of sleep.

For us older runners, sleep is critical for recovery and building energy.

A lack of sleep, or a lack of living life, is not a badge of honor.

A 60 hour work week is not something to be proud of. Because pulling from life or sleep is the only way to those hours.

Which is a signal that something is broken and needs to change.

You can’t touch the 8 hours of sleep because the long-term consequences to your health and well-being are too great (read Mathew Walker’s Why We Sleep for more on this.)

And you shouldn’t want to pull from the life bucket because that means:

  • Less time working out

  • Less dates with your wife

  • Less playing with your kids

  • Less having fun with your friends

  • And less traveling + going on adventures

If you are still working, are you following this rule?

I hope you are focusing on getting your sleep and living life.

Have a great week!

-Herb

End of an Era
Sunday with Herb   Today is a bittersweet day for a couple of reasons. First, I'm super happy with the start of my "Forever Running Club" hosted on the Skool app. But today is also the day I pull the plug on my "Forever Runners over 50" Facebook group. I can't even tell you how long I've hosted that group, probably around 9 years. Many great people and great memories from that group, but with t...
How to Squeeze All the Juice Out of Retirement
Sunday with Herb   10,000 North Americans retire every day. This is a major transformation most of us are not prepard for.  Last week I watched a TED Talk from Dr. Riley Moynes on the 4 phases of retirement. As a retired government worker, it really hit home and I thought I'd share his 4 phases with you. 4 Phases of Retirement: Phase #1 - The Vacation: Relaxing, fun in the sun, we are free! But...
The 180 formula that saved my running career
"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got." - Henry Ford   It's Monday morning 5am and I'm down at the CrossFit gym doing my warm-up. Just an easy spin on the stationary bike and some floor exercises. I sit down on the bench and this warm flush comes over me, I get light headed and start to sweat profusely, then the all too familiar chest pain comes on....
